Is “Europe” a country yet? I notice that now “Europe” has a foreign minister, a socialist peer named Lady Catherine Ashton. Pretty ludicrous, what? Who’s the foreign minister for Latin America, or Asia? What does this person do all day, besides read the Economist, design her website and chat with Hillary?. What would Lady Catherine and Mrs. Clinton talk about, besides kids, husbands and the allure of the single payer?
The EU has gone from being unimportant to being not only unimportant (unless you are a pickle packer or a toilet manufacturer) but also impenetrable. Is there one person on earth who is not French who has read the Treaty of Rome, the Treaty of Maastricht, the Treaty of Amsterdam, the (defeated) constitution, and the lame Treaty of Lisbon (am I leaving anything out)?
And who, outside of Brussels, can explain the difference between José Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, and Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council? Are their offices next door? Do each of them have their own cabinets and exclusive executive A-320s? Do they have lunch together and talk about how much they hate the Greeks and the Germans?
The EU was supposed to make Europe into a global superpower and thus redress the imbalance in the post-cold war unipolar world. It's proven to be a complete disaster.
Talleyrand, Metternich and Bismarck understood the sources and uses of power. The EU understands neither. It is the Socialist International masquerading as a country.
